How I got Started
Hello and welcome to my website! My name is Peter Benne and I started Coastal Shaft Collars in 2021 as a side hustle to my mechanical engineering job in the food processing industry. We used thousands of collars every year and a few things bugged me. The quality of the foreign collars we used always seemed to be subpar and the price was high for what we were getting.
I saw an opportunity and decided to test the markets on Amazon. I bought a hobby mill and started making collars in the garage of the house a couple buddy’s and I rented. I’m sure my landlord would not have been impressed if they knew!
Sales were decent over that first year and there was potential to add more sizes, types and materials. I decided to bite the bullet and got the machine and space I actually needed. I bought a live tool lathe with a y axis and a sub spindle and it’s been cranking out collars ever since. I started this website in early 2023 and eventually left my day job late in 2024 to pursue this full time.
Through my time at my day job to even the games I play (Factorio and Satisfactory anyone?) I found that what I really enjoy doing is optimizing and improving the efficiency of a process to the extreme. My long-term goal with this business is to push the process of manufacturing collars to its absolute limit and pass the savings I see along to you. Thanks for reading and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
